In an effort to see what the enemy was up to, I read some articles on Mets.com. To my surprise, almost every article mentioned the Phillies. I understand the team's frustration and the desire to overtake the Phillies in the division, but do you make every move with the Phillies in mind?
Example number 1: From Free Agent Wolf Confirms Mets Interest "And then there is the matter of the Phillies' batting order and its recently increased left-handed predominance." "Since the day Perez filed for free agency, a void has existed in the
Mets' rotation. And that void appears greater now that the Phillies
could have three left-handed-hitting run producers --
Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and new left fielder Raul Ibanez -- in the
middle of their regular batting order.
"I'm not sure how [the Mets] would see that," Wolf said. "But I'd think
that would play into it." Of course, teams other than the Mets play the
Phillies and have need for righty-lefty balance in their rotations."
Example number 2: From Mets 12/15 mailbag "That tandem probably won't produce at a level consistent with the
premier left fielders in the game, not as much as the Phillies' new
left fielder, Raul Ibanez."
Example number 3: Then of course there was the K-Rod article where he ran his mouth about a rivalry he knows nothing about in K-Rod Promises to Bring the Heat: "Rodriguez on Saturday afternoon called his new club the "team to
beat," echoing the words of outfielder Carlos Beltran last spring and
Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins before him. And he spared little shame
in doing so. "I'm a really competitive guy," Rodriguez said. "I like to win, of
course, and if they ask me who's the ballclub that's going to win the
National League East? It's going to be the Mets. Easy question.""
Example number 4: My favorite. Mets general manager Omar Minaya proclaimed the Phillies the better team in the New York Daily News. Mets Introduce K-Rod While Omar Minaya says Phillies are Team to Beat "The Mets, even after adding two terrific arms to their bullpen, still aren't as good as the Phillies, their own GM said.
"We're not better than them, no," Minaya said of the Mets' NL East rivals. "Right now, they're world champions.
"The
only way you get to be better than them is to beat them. You've got to
go out there and get it done. You don't win championships on paper.
I've never believed in that. Do I think we've improved our club? Yes.
But the bottom line is the Phillies have won the World Series and they
won the division twice. They have a good team and the experience of
being in playoffs and World Series - that is huge. So we have a lot of
work to do.""
My favorite part of this article was the poll next to it. Keep in mind this is the New York Daily News, it asks:
What do you think of Omar Minaya saying the Phillies are the team to beat in the N.L. East?
